The British newspaper Guardian's online version, Guardian Unlimited, ran a story today titled "A Dangerous Lust for Power." In it, they bring up the concern that Britain's constitution is unwritten. They, of course, simply use it to attack Tony Blair, but it struck me as an interesting reflection on the truth of Montesquieu's assertion that:

[the love of equality and one's country] is the spring which sets the republican government in motion, as honor is the spring which gives motion to monarchy.

Back in the old days, they didn't need a written constitution, because honor was still one of the main springs in the societal clock. Now, as they shed the last vestiges of monarchy and move towards socialism (societally), they also shed honor as a primary motivator. There will probably never again be in England a "charge of the light brigade." Everyone is just too sensible.

But there is a worrisome part to Montesquieu's assertion, and that is that love of equality and of one's country, what he calls political virtue, is dangerously lacking in American society. Whether the lack of political virtue is a symptom or a cause of change towards a lower form of government, I do not know. However, it would seem that within the next hundred years or so we are heading towards a great shift in political thought. I pray that it will be an upwards one.

Jill Carroll, an American journalist working in the Middle East, was kidnapped and held by a terrorist organization that threatened to kill her. However, for some reason, they have released her, and she is more or less undamaged.

We underlings of the blogosphere have recieved a request from Queen Michelle Malkin. It is for people to translate the thousands of pages of documents siezed from the Taliban and from Saddam Hussein, now open to the public thanks to Congressmen Santorum and Hoekstra. Those who can read Arabic are well-suited to the task, of course, but non-Arabic speakers can use Almisbar, as long as they know the alefbet. Forward all translations to Malkin, with the subject line containing the word “translation.”

The UAE port deal is one of the few issues that I happen to agree on with the Liberals. You’ll notice that I say “happen to,” not simply “agree with.” The reason I say that is that the Dems are merely against it because Bush proposed it and also because they are anti-everything. Eventually, if you disagree with everything a politician does, you’ll be right about something. So it’s important to not use the old ad hominem fallacy of assuming “The Democrats are crazy. The Democrats are against X policy. Therefore, we should be for C policy.”

Having said that, we must also be careful not to necessarily take what any politician, Republican or Democrat, says at face value. Almost all politicians, even the most honest, have some enemies whom they would happily destroy politically. You don’t get to thetop anymore by being super-honest, sorry to say.

Sorry if my posting schedule is a little erratic. It will be until school lets out, and will probably come in spurts on the weekends even then.
